Critical Reasoning

The area of Thinking Skills that involves identifying the best way to strengthen or weaken an argument, and assessing the logical validity of reasoning statements. This is the largest area of Thinking Skills, making up around 40 percent of the Thinking Skills exam. In order to master this area, a student must first understand how to break down arguments, identify assumptions and differentiate between logically equivalent and non-equivalent statements.

Logical Reasoning

The area of Thinking Skills that involves scenario-based logic problems where the student must deduce a specific detail using a passage of information governed by a set of rules. This is the 2nd largest area of Thinking Skills, making up around 30 percent of the Thinking Skills exam. In order to master this area, a student must first understand how to identify the objective of a problem, interpret complex instructions and formulate step-by-step strategies.

Abstract reasoning

The area of Thinking Skills that involves visual-based problems where the student must visualise and perform actions to an image following a complex set of instructions. This is the smallest area of Thinking Skills, making up around 10 percent of the Thinking Skills exam. In order to master this area, a student must first understand how to

generate and manipulate mental images, visualise an object from different angles and identify trends in a series of related images.

Numerical reasoning

The area of Thinking Skills that involves mathematics-based logic problems where the student must deduce a specifc detail by applying a set of complex rules to a passage of information. The question may either require calculations or involve a mathematical concept. This is the 3rd largest area of Thinking Skills, making up around 20 percent of the Thinking Skills exam. In order to master this area, a student must first understand fundamental mathematics theory, how to identify the objective of a problem and interpret complex instructions.
